OPERATIONS MANAGEMENT & STRATEGY (3 SCU)

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, students are expected to be able to: apply a systematic approach and integrative thinking in making operational decisions; analyze the impact of global and local market issues to operation; apply techniques to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of an operation system to support a firm’s performance; analyze the role of information technology in improving operations system performance.

Topics:

The course introduces the strategic role of operations management to contribute in the value creation of the business process from the design, operation, and improvement on the systems that create and deliver the firm’s primary products and services. Currently, operations management comprises the incorporation of technology, people, and operating procedures which involve the planning and structuring of work to accomplish ongoing organizational tasks. While the operations strategy extends in designing the operating system through combining resources and processes available by maximizing aligned competencies with the organization’s looked- for competitive position.

This course will show how in the era of an interconnected world, the use of technologies requires transforming the way operations management is carried out within organizations, with the possibility for applications in numerous fields. The use of technology affects the analyses, design, and management of processes, so the service or product is produced faster, at less cost, and with higher quality. Therefore, students are challenged to understand and explore such essential transformations of a business based on the implementation of technological approaches in order to generate value. Such transformation is derived from optimizing, adapting, or radically transforming the operations model. A process view of operations will be used to analyze different key operational dimensions such as capacity management, flow (cycle) time management, supply chain management, inventory control, quality management, and technology management.
