PANCASILA AND INDONESIAN CULTURE (2 SCU)
Learning Outcomes:
On successful completion of this course, students will be able to: understand the Pancasila, national ideology, and the history of Indonesia; explain and identify different cultural elements in Indonesian daily life: social organization and kinship, language, economy, politics, religion, art and aesthetics; and analyze cultural changes and development issues in Indonesia.
Topics:
This class introduces students to the national ideology called Pancasila (the five pillars) and the diversity of Indonesian culture. Students are expected to learn how the values of Pancasila are implemented in the multicultural nation by understanding the political era in Indonesia’s history. The class also introduces concepts related to culture such as cultural values, norms, knowledge, belief systems, identity, representation, economy, social class, local wisdom in several aspects, globalization, and social-cultural policies. In addition, students will experience hands-on cultural activities through site visits and workshops. Two workshops are batik (cloth painting) and traditional dance. In discussion sessions, students use mainly cases of cultures, ethnic groups, and societies in Indonesia.
