NEW MEDIA AND NEWSROOM MANAGEMENT (4 SCU)

Learning Outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, students are expected to be able to demonstrate journalistic skills for print media; develop an editorial ability for print media journalism; develop effective and essential skills in layout and picture editing for print publication; demonstrate effective journalism for print media; describe and discuss how editors perform multiple roles in the newsroom; illustrate newsroom structures, values, and practice; as well as identify global and local trends in media ownership and control.

Topics:

In this course, students will learn about the foundations and characteristic of media industry and organization, which include leadership, planning, ethical and legal responsibilities and the challenge of newsrooms. Due to the practical nature of newsroom management, students are exposed to the practical process of the newsroom and its management. This course will also present an introduction to the history, theory, and practice of new media in relation to newsroom management, with a focus on technological, communicative, and cultural contexts.
