ACADEMIC ENGLISH FOR PROFESSIONALS (2 SCU)
Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of the course, students should be able to: cite, paraphrase, summarize and/or quote sources correctly and apply other research skills in writing; revise their own work in terms of content and formatting; revise their own work in terms language, style, and mechanics; and present their research output in class for feedback.
Topics:
The course is intended to sharpen students’ academic writing skills with the end goal of getting their research output published in reputable academic journals. Specifically, it aims to familiarize students with the process of research writing including, but not limited to, achieving the correct style and format for research articles. In addition, the course acquaints students with the publication process and shares strategies for academic journal publishing success. The topics discussed within the course are the following: Identifying and avoiding a plagiarism; making a good argument; creating a research space (CARS); revising the Introduction, Review of Literature, and Methods sections of the research paper; writing the Findings and Discussion; presenting evidence; writing the Conclusion; writing the Abstract, research highlights, and keywords; finalizing arguments; proofreading and editing the research paper; presenting the research output in class; and submitting the paper to a research journal.
