CREATIVE DESIGN RESEARCH SKILLS (2 SCU)
Learning Outcomes:
Upon successful completion of this course, each student will have the ability to: demonstrate the ability to conduct research through a variety of methods; analyse the information or experience; and begin to formulate independent judgement; evidence knowledge of design research methodologies including Research Through Design; use appropriate methods to locate relevant sources of research and apply personal judgement in assessing, interpreting, and presenting the findings; evidence your capacity to generate, explore and progress ideas based on research findings, and begin to show a critical awareness, reasoned judgements, and appropriate solutions; and take responsibility for your own work, reflect on your own learning, use the views of others in the development or enhancement of your work, and to make constructive use of feedback
Topics:
The students will explore the holistic process of gathering, generating, collating and presentation of visual and textual research in design. The students will use appropriate methods to locate relevant sources of research data and apply personal judgement in assessing, interpreting, and presenting the findings and using the research to inform design proposals. This module will introduce them to a range of design research approaches including, for example:
- Desk research: the use of academic and design literature; use of popular media; trends
- Research in the virtual realm – museums – galleries – websites and online creative portals – podcasts and design
- Generative research: individual and group research; creative workshops; sketching as
