Learning outcomes:

Upon successful completion of this course, each student will have the ability to: demonstrate a critical awareness of cultural and contemporary global design issues through the investigation of international designers and global issues; justify your concepts through reasoned judgement, located in and informed by current critical thinking; produce and communicate creative solutions with distinguishable skill, application, and presentation; evidence your confident approach to writing style in relation to structure, content, and quality of debate; and evaluate your own progress, exercise an enhanced level of self-criticism and analysis in respect of your developing design project proposal.


This module will allow you to further develop your research and analytical skills in identifying and exploring the work of key international designers or brands within your field. These skills will be further enhanced by exploring a global matter of concern, though, for example, one of the UN Sustainable Development Goals. You will learn how to synthesise your findings through sketch exploration in order to produce and iteratively refine a design project proposal. This exploration will enable you to refine your visual research approach, critical design decision-making and justification and your analytical and professional writing skills. With consideration of the key issues that will inform and shape the creative industries in years to come, you will identify and propose a challenging design research project that is a mature, realistic response to the contemporary design world. You will demonstrate a contextual understanding of personal practice in relation to broader cultural socio economic and political contexts. You will be expected to claim ownership of this learning and to act in an autonomous and analytical manner.
