History and Development
Master Programs in Information System Management, Master Program in Computer Science, Master Program in Industrial Engineering, Master Program in Communication Science, Doctoral Program in Computer Science, Professional Engineer Program and Architect Profession Education, at Bina Nusantara (BINUS) University have shown their continuous commitment to be the best in delivering quality education that is relevant to industry needs. To achieve international quality standards, we continuously make our best effort to provide students with an excellent learning process to conduct research practice, up-to-date course materials, and professional resources to deliver knowledge and skill. The program is designed to help graduates gain excellent global career opportunities. Due to increased market requirements and the demand from experts and leaders in business and industry, in September 2008, BINUS UNIVERSITY established the Master Program in Information System Management, and Computer Science and Industrial Engineering was introduced in September 2014. The Accounting Program and Communication Science were opened in September 2017. Doctoral Program in Computer Science was opened in 2015. Professional Engineer Program was opened in 2018 and Architect Profession Education was opened in 2025.
Doctoral Program in Computer Science (DCS) offers streams in Information Systems and Computer Science. All students in the program receive Doctor of Computer Science degree upon the completion of the academic requirements, regardless of their area of interest, specialization, or research focus. As a research-oriented degree, the DCS Program prepares students to perform research practice exceptionally for careers in academia, industry, and government. Students are expected to demonstrate excellence in both defining and executing a substantial research project that forms a novel contribution to the state of the art in computer science. Publications in international journals, as well as the Intellectual Property as an output of dissertation results, are mandatory to all students as partial fulfillment to finish their studies. With a highly individualized program, the degree provides students with in-depth research within the Binus research roadmap and a rigorous breadth of knowledge across a variety of disciplines.
Doctor of Computer Science (DCS) by Research is a doctoral degree focused on original research and contribution to the field of computer science. It is typically designed for a three- year program in that the primary focus is independent research rather than coursework. The DCS by Research students are required to produce a significant original contribution to knowledge in the form of a doctoral dissertation. Moreover, on the DCS by research, students are assigned from the 1st semester a promotor to guide their research. The main output of DCS by research is high impact papers in the conferences and journals; the Intellectual Property from research that can be in the patent or copyrighted material will be main result from the research dissertation.
Prior to entering the DCS by research, students have to develop a detailed research proposal outlining their research question, methodology, and expected outcomes. Upon their acceptance to DCS by research, the students conduct independent research under the guidance of their supervisor. There are some Dissertation Examinations as well as evaluations that students have to be followed.
Master Program in Information Systems Management focuses on the integrating a business approach with a technology perspective. The graduates have competency as a leader in information systems and information technology, which can control the function of information systems in any field organization with both future insight and strategy to reach the vision, mission, and target that has been determined, particularly regarding the development of information technology. Moreover, the graduates can act as consultants of information systems and information technology for the organization in planning information systems strategy, including an evaluation of the effectiveness and efficiency of information systems and information technology applications. It emphasizes on the following aspects: Advice, Value/Assesses, Communication and Innovation. Process management in the development of information technology is the core of the subject given, including Services Oriented Enterprise & Innovation, Advanced Topics in Information Systems, IS Research Methodology, IS Project and Change Management, IS Strategic Planning and Enterprise IT Governance & Compliance, Business Intelligence and Data Analytics, Digital Business and Transformation Management, Digital Entrepreneurship and New Venture Creation, IS Investment, Valuation and Asset Management, Agile Digital Product Innovation, IS Security & Risk Management, and Digital Marketing Analytics. The curriculum is designed by referring to the curriculum recommended by the Association for Computing Machinery (ACM), and the Association for Information Systems (AIS), and reviewed by foreign universities with the prestigious reputation of qualified information systems majors.
Master Program in Computer Science is a Post-Graduate study program that focuses on two aspects: information technology and business knowledge, where it is expected that the graduates will have a commanding view of the process and performance of business corporate. It is expected that the graduates have competency as leaders with vision and future insight, able to design and apply information technology that will improve the work performance of an organization. The objectives of this program are to prepare outstanding visionary ICT leaders for industry and government who are capable of facing the challenges of the future in Information Communication Technology, such as big data and artificial intelligence. In this line, it focuses on providing an excellent advanced education/research and professional services in information technology, recognized globally, that attracts and retains a talented and creative student body and faculty, and creating innovative technologies leading to new products and improved business processes, thus enhancing the quality of life. The graduate competencies of this program encompass the competencies to design an ICT infrastructure blueprint and strategic plan that can be applied by the industry. In line with that, graduates will be able to value the transformation of data into knowledge to attain business competitiveness. Graduates will be able to propose ICT solutions in any field based on computational intelligence by applying state-of-the-art research and development that can increase the value of humanity and environmental aspects. The graduates have the opportunity to fill positions at prestigious firms such as IT Leader, IT Innovator, IT Business Creator, IT Consultant, IT Solution and System Integrator, IT Project Manager, Chief Analytics Officer, Chief Data Officer, Data Analyst, Data Scientist, Data Architect, Data Engineer.
Mater Program in Industrial Engineering provides its graduates with the necessary skill sets to contribute greatly in the industrial management area in the Industry 4.0 era. The program offers a curriculum that pays attention to building analytical and strategic thinking, leveraged by technical capabilities in engineering simulation and optimization. Upon graduation, the alumnae may participate in many roles in modern organizations.
Master Program in Communication Science is designed to have competence as a leader in Communication, especially in the field of a marketing communications strategy that can sell products and maintain a good image and branding products of the company or organization both internally and externally, and have scientific insights and future strategy. Graduates are equipped with knowledge of leadership and innovation to compete in global competition, as well as knowledge and experience of international research to provide solutions in the social life of the community.
Master of Design integrates design, technology, culture, and business, focusing on sustainability through its Advanced Designpreneur concept, which merges design expertise with entrepreneurship. The program equips graduates to become advanced designers, global design entrepreneurs, design lecturers, and researchers, ready to contribute to the creative industry and pursue further studies. Emphasizing a technology-driven approach, the curriculum promotes the development of innovative, sustainable design solutions, with industry collaborations enhancing the quality and recognition of final projects.
Professional Engineer Program is designed to benefit working professionals seeking to increase their qualifications through specialised degree and professional certificate programs. This program provides the availability to increase individual competence and professionalism through continuous professional development to become a Certified Engineer. The curriculum of the professional engineering program is structured based on a professional practice point of view. The scope of engineering disciplines in this program may cover civil engineering and the built environment, architecture, computer engineering, chemical engineering, industrial engineering, and food technology.
Architect Profession Education Program at BINUS University prepares future architects to become competent, ethical, and globally minded professionals. Through a curriculum aligned with national and international standards, the program integrates professional practice, innovation, and real-world collaboration to equip graduates for the path toward becoming registered architects.
